Ministry of Higher Education Announces the Admission of More Than 231,000 Students to Public Universities for the 2026–2027 Academic Year
The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has announced the admission of 231,878 students to Iraqi public universities for the 2026–2027 academic year.
The Deputy Minister for Scientific Research Affairs, Professor Dr Haider Abdul Dahad, stated that the minimum admission averages for medical disciplines were 99.67% for General Medicine, 98.74% for Dentistry, and 98.39% for Pharmacy.
The Deputy Minister added that students from Schools for Distinguished Students had filled their entire allocated quota, representing 15% of the admission plan for medical disciplines. The minimum admission averages for these students were 98.53% for General Medicine, 96.99% for Dentistry, and 95.73% for Pharmacy.
He explained that the Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up would take the necessary measures regarding the digital appeals portal, which is designed to address several categories of students. These include students who did not receive an admission offer, those who did not apply through the central admission system, and students with averages above 75% who were admitted to institutes. The portal will also accommodate secondary school graduates born in 1996 or later who achieved an average of 90% or above and have not previously applied to public universities.
The Deputy Minister emphasised that the admission process was conducted in accordance with clear regulations and criteria characterised by transparency, fairness, and equal opportunities for all students. He confirmed that no exceptions had been made outside the approved procedures and instructions, ensuring the integrity of the admission process and the principle of merit-based allocation of university places.
Dr Haider Abdul Dahad further explained that the Ministry had introduced new academic specialisations in nuclear energy at the Middle Technical University, the University of Baghdad, Al-Nahrain University, and Al-Mustansiriyah University. These programmes aim to meet the country’s need for specialised personnel at the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission and to support the peaceful uses of nuclear energy in electricity generation, medicine, and other vital civilian fields.
For his part, the Chairman of the Iraqi Atomic Energy Commission, Dr Thanaa Jassib Al-Zajrawi, stressed the importance of cooperation between the Ministry and the Commission in supplying qualified human resources and specialised scientific expertise. He also highlighted the need to strengthen collaboration in environmental affairs, education, and training to develop competent and well-trained personnel capable of meeting professional requirements and enhancing national capabilities in fields related to atomic energy.
In the same context, the Director General of the Department of Studies, Planning and Follow-up, Dr Hazem Abdul Razzaq, announced that the electronic application portal would be opened for the Government Parallel University Education and Private Higher Education admission channels.
He noted that admission confirmation and registration procedures for students accepted through these two channels would take place after their admission results were announced. Students would also be allowed to apply through these channels while retaining their existing admission offers at public universities.
